Kinja'd!!!

Our beater Nissan Altima has been throwing an "evaporative emissions small leak" code Aka the gas cap is missing code. Never really noticed the fuel filler neck was destroyed by the rust belt.. Anyone replace one of these? I got the code to stay away by placing a sheet of heavy duty plastic betwEen filler neck and cap to correct the bad seal and has thus far stayed away. will do some moRe digging tomorrow but fIgured I'd present to oppo. and as always suck it mobile kinja!

Normally I'd say it's probably just the seal on the cap, but that looks pretty bad. Replacing the filler neck might not be too terribly bad of a job.

My solution to something similar on an old Volvo was to cut off a section of garden hose and affix it over the affected area with a bicycle clamp, but that might not be what you're looking for ...

Put some tape over the hole and take a wire brush to it? The cup kind that go in your drill? That's the only thing I can think of other than replacing it.

I did a filler neck once, never ever ever again.

I'm sure depending on the car it can be better, but in my experience it just sucked.

You should be able to get to some of the neck through the trunk, if not you'll be going in through the wheel well. replacing that rusty neck is your best option as you are dumping rust into the tank every time you fill up. Try to find a wreckers yard to pull one off of and go that route if you can.

The first thing I'd do is to shove a bit of rag in the hole and take a wire brush to it to see if it can be cleaned up enough to be smooth.

I've never done one on an Altima but the one on my Subaru was surprisingly cheap and easy.

My suggestion is that you take a nice rag, dipped in alcohol and try to rub the rust really well, then after fully dousing the afflicted area, get an angle grinder and try to remove the rust. The main thing is to keep a good shine on it. The best way to determine the amount of shine isn't the flicker of a lighter's flame. The flame gives a lot of dimensionality and provides a wide range of angles and varying light through which to determine your effectiveness.

Tl;dr - I gave lots of terrible suggestions that involved sparks and/or flames near a gas tank...please don't hurt yourself lol.

Going to clean it best I can and prime it with something if I can but thinking an extra cushy gasket around that gas cap could be a cHeap addition to mY solution thanks for sparking my imagination!
